Top tips for hiring a car at Orlando Sanford Intl airport

  • Orlando Sanford Intl Airport (SFB) is the secondary airport that services travellers to Orlando, and as such it tends to be less busy which will make picking up your Orlando Sanford Intl Airport car hire a relatively fast process. As a small airport, getting around will be relatively easy. It is conveniently located, and it will only take roughly 25–35min to drive from the airport to downtown Orlando. Your own hire car gives you more freedom and will let you decide whether you wish to travel into the city centre or go straight to one of the city’s amusement parks.
  • Make sure you understand your provider's return policy before you pick up your car hire at Orlando Sanford Intl Airport. Some will have a simple drop-off process whereas others will take more time and need you to plan ahead. Some companies ask that you book a time slot for your return when you take the car while others will give you a deadline. Most providers offer after-hours returns but make sure you know if the charges cease at drop off or continue to accrue until the company opens the next day.
  • Orlando is a popular tourist destination so the airport can get busy. Generally, the easiest time to pick up and drop off your car will be on the weekend or on a weekday during the early morning or late afternoon and evening. However, all the providers at the airport are usually open between 08:00 and 23:00 and some are open until 23:59 giving you some extra flexibility. After-hours pick up and drop off services are available from most companies that provide car hire at Orlando Sanford Intl Airport, but these are required to be booked ahead of time. Make sure you check the car for any damages and understand what your insurance covers to avoid any unexpected fees.
  • Some providers will offer a premium service that includes full insurance, a full tank of petrol and extra car seats. This can often work out cheaper as a package than if you acquire these individually from other sources. Companies such as Alamo will sometimes allow you to choose a specific vehicle from the category you've chosen.
  • Book your car hire at Orlando Sanford Intl airport at least 1 day before your trip in order to get a below-average price

FAQs about renting a car at Orlando Sanford Intl airport

  • Which providers are the most convenient?

Different providers will be more convenient depending on your needs. Budget, for example, is located very close to the arrivals hall; simply exit baggage claim and turn right. Alamo is known for having a very easy and quick drop-off process; it simply hands out the keys and is located a short walk from the exit.

  • Where are hire cars located?

Once you arrive and have gone through baggage claim you will be able to follow signs directing you outside the terminal and to the right where the building housing car hire at Orlando Sanford Intl Airport is located. This building houses all the car hire companies at the airport. Once they have gone over your paperwork your provider will direct you to your vehicle. Most of these will be on-site and if they are off-site there will usually be a shuttle bus provided to transport you; whether the car is on or off-site will be clear in the booking process.

  • What documentation is required?

As in most places, in order to collect your hire car, you will need your normal driver’s licence as well as your passport. In addition, you will need a passport size photograph which you can obtain before your trip from certain post offices. You will also need a credit card with an expiry date after your return date. Have your documentation ready to go so that you can get through the process as quickly as possible.

  • Which car rental companies will pick you up at Orlando Sanford Intl airport?

Car rental companies that offer shuttle or pick-up services from Orlando Sanford Intl airport to off-airport locations include Advantage, Alamo, Avis, Budget, Dollar, Enterprise Rent-A-Car, Europcar, Florida Van Rentals, Hertz, and National.

Hertz customer service in Sanford downgraded my vehicle, Hertz Corp customer service was completely lost trying to help resolve the issue, and Hertz charged an additional $76 upon return with no indication why. Gas was 100%, car returned on time to the location stated, and no tolls or other charges used. When I demanded an invoice of charges, they kept providing the same one with the $29 fee and $200 hold.

Everything about the car, pick-up and drop off was great. But I was frustrated because I wanted to find out if I there was after-hours drop off, but there was no way to reach hertz by phone and actually talk to a human. I called at least 20 times. In the end I had to call the road-size emergency number to actually talk to someone and they were able to help me out.

Felt like a bait and switch when the website gave me a Tesla Model 3 as the example of the car that would be available and then it turned out to be a Chevrolet Bolt with over 35k miles. The Bolt turned out to be a pretty good car, just not in the same category as a Model 3. The price was too good to be true in the first place so I should have known, I just don't like the bait and switch. The interior screen had big streaks on it and the Bolt takes forever to charge but the rest of the experience was pretty good.

The rental process was smooth from start to finish. The vehicle was clean-ish some stains and wrappers but that’s okay, well-maintained, and exactly what I needed for my long-distance move from Florida to Texas. Pickup and drop-off were easy, the staff was professional and helpful, and the car was comfortable and reliable throughout the trip. Overall, a great experience and I would definitely rent again.

This company is such a scam. They told me I needed basic coverage when I already had insurance. When I realized they had added an additional 400 dollars to my bill I couldn’t get even one person to answer the phone at the location for four days straight and the central office said they couldn’t help it has to be the local branch. I asked three different people before I left the property and they all said “oh you got the basic coverage” and did not ever once tell me it wasn’t required. I tried to get help and got ZERO. I will never use this company again. The vehicle was great, the return was great but the complete deceit on the front end keeps me from ever using this company again.

Lots of communication and no wait at the airport. The SLI was very confusing to me since I spoke to my insurance prior to the rental and was assured I had everything I needed, so that cost, which almost double the cost of the rental, was confusing. The car was nice and definitely suited our needs. Drop off was a little difficult since I was given the wrong address in a text, but the took us to the airport right away.

I arrived at the counter to pick up the rental. I did not have a credit card on me. The very rude agent told me that in order to release the rental to me without a credit card, they would have to run a credit check. I showed her the rental policy online that stated a rental could be picked up with a debit card and hold fee. Even though the policy is online, and I showed her word for word, she refused to allow me to retrieve the rental. I left and went to another rental counter , Alamo and successfully rented a vehicle with Alamo. I will never use Avis again!

Scammed by insurance add ons which I refused, proving I already had same coverage. A $217 4-day rental fee, prepaid thru priceline quickly rose to $580 which I challenged only to be told "your car is no longer available, we rented it to someone else". They did offer me a ride back to Sanford Orlando where they'd picked me up 30 mins late, one hour earlier. I believe Nextcar routinely scams customers. All the time you're completing paperwork they have a TV blaring info on how FL laws mandated ins requirements. Never had that from ethical auto rental agencies.

These people are crooks. Tried telling me that because my insurance card did not have "collision coverage" written on it, that i had to purchase their coverage. Called my insurance and they emailed me a copy of my insurance, then the lady said it was a different car than what was listed on the card we had with us. We have several vehicles with full coverage on our insurance all in our name. Then they wanted us to pre-pay for tolls. Then the $500 deposit. Had them take us (me and my wife) back to the airport. We walked in and rented from Avis with no problems. Stay away from wrent a wreck!

Convenient pick-up on airport arrival. Company charges $199.99 a day to use your own auto insurance. Can not opt out. They call it an administration fee. Attempted to force me to buy a toll road package. Very hard sell of add one and it cost an extra $233.00 after quoted price on written prepaid reservation. Would not recommend this company for car rental. Car rental is unmanned and you leave the vehicle in a parking lot with the keys in the glove box and car unlocked. You then text them a picture of the parking space of the vehicle so an employee can find it at a later time.

Rent-a-wreck IS A SCAM!!! They don't provide their local policies within the initial contracts. They say they send it in an email before the rental date, but the email I received provided a broken link to the policy. I was unable to read until I got to pick up the rental on a different page on the employee's phone. At this point, it was to late to cancel and ended up losing my initial required deposit. I wanted to use my own insurance, which they allowed me ti use, but they then force you to pay a $20/day admin fee for using your own insurance instead of using their $40/day insurance. They were also forcing me to pay a $10/day for the use of a toll transponder. I was still required to pay the tolls. I have my own toll transponder that is transferable but they said it wouldn't work. I walked away from the rental and went to their competitor which ended up being cheaper. This rental company IS A SCAM!!!
