The roads in Pune are well maintained and wide enough to accommodate all vehicle types, but the chaotic traffic lends itself better to more compact models. All of the companies offering car hire in Pune will have a wide range of smaller models to choose from. If you have to go with a bigger sedan, try to find a slim model. These smaller vehicles are easier to navigate when there are more cars than expected, and they're easier to find parking for.

The speed limit in Pune and surrounding areas is the same as in the rest of Maharashtra, so you'll need to be aware of them regardless of where you drive. If you're in the city and other built-up areas, you'll be limited to 60 km/h. Some smaller roads have a limit of 50 km/h, which will be posted on signposts for you to see. If you're driving your hire car on an expressway between cities, you'll be capped at 120 km/h, while most national highways and major roads have a limit of 100 km/h.

Finding free parking in Pune is a thing of the past, even the open-air parking spots are charged per hour or in increments of 15min. If there are any free parking spaces available, the high number of vehicles makes it almost impossible to find one. Most major sites and shopping districts will have car parks available. Some of them charge you on entry and others will give you a ticket that you'll need to pay before leaving. It’s doubtful you’ll find any on-street parking meters.
