Take insurance from car rental suppliers rather than online. Online is cheaper but in case of something happens then you have to go through online agency.
Verified travelerSept 2026
Read into the contract and what it includes or not
Verified travelerAug 2025
Insist on a clean car and check the car throughly for damage before you drive away.
Verified travelerMay 2024
Always take a video of all the car before leaving with it and make sure everything works well and always do a video before giving it back the prouve that all the things works and that there is no damage to the car from the inside out (To back you off)
Verified travelerJul 2023
Driving in Quebec City it simple, obey the traffic lights and signage. Parking in Quebec is a bit of a pain but overnight parking garages are easily accessible. I’d recommend renting a car to see beyond Quebec City

Try to have a good understanding of where you want to drive to.

KAYAK’s top tips for renting a car in Québec City

  • There is much to explore in and around Quebec City, and the surrounding areas are perfect for extensive road trips, during which travelers can discover the various attractions of the city, like the Citadelle or Chateâu Frontenac. Gain the flexibility to create your own travel schedule when exploring French Canada with your own rental car during your stay in the city.
  • When landing in Jean Lesage Quebec International Airport, head to the administrative building, on whose ground floor there are various onsite agencies offering vehicles for every need. The airport is about 11 miles from the heart of Quebec and travelers can be in the vicinity of the Citadelle and city center in about 40 minutes via the Autoroute 440 E. Note that public transport will take well over an hour to get you to the center, so picking up your car directly upon arrival is a good idea.
  • Quebec is a beautiful city with many old and new parts -- there are old cobblestone streets and broad highways alike. Maneuvering through the narrower streets can be a challenge at first, so adjust your speed, if necessary. Drivers in Quebec usually adhere to the street regulations, making it a pleasant experience to drive through the city. The average speed is faster than some US cities, which may take some getting used to.
  • Rush hour usually hits the city between 7 and 9 am and 5 and 8 pm on weekdays and can lead up to delays of one hour. Especially the 73 can get clogged up during peak times in both directions and should be avoided by either taking the side alleys or heading out at another time of day altogether, if possible. Also remember to stay in the right lane, as the left is only for passing other cars, a rule that is mostly adhered to by Canadian drivers.

FAQs about renting a car in Québec City

  • What type of car is recommended for driving in Québec City?

If you intend to drive mainly within the city limits, a compact car may be a better choice due to the many narrow roads within the old parts of the city. If visiting in the winter with plans to venture out of the city, a 4-wheel-drive car such as an SUV is recommended.

  • What’s the speed limit in Québec City?

Unlike in the US, speed limits are posted in kilometers per hour in Canada, so keep the conversions in mind. Within the city limits of Quebec City, 50 km/h (31 mph) is generally permitted, though it is only 30 km/h (18 mph) in some areas. Secondary roads allow up to 90 km/h (55 mph) and on freeways 100 km/h (62 mph) is permitted.

  • Where are the best places to park in Québec City?

On-street parking is metered in most areas in Quebec City, but there is also a plethora of parking lots available in and around downtown, such as the D’église Saint-Dominique in Montcalm or the Place Haute-Ville in Saint-Jean Baptiste, which cost about $11 CAD ($8 USD) for two hours and approximately $18 CAD ($13 USD) for one day.

  • How can I find car hires near me in Québec City?

Take a look at our extensive car hire location map to find the best car hire deals near you.

  • How much does a Medium car rental cost in Québec City?

A Medium car hire in Québec City costs ₹ 5,150 per day, on average.

  • How much does a Small car rental cost in Québec City?

A Small car hire in Québec City costs ₹ 5,143 per day, on average.

We had rented it online through the Kayak website for a Sunday 2pm pick up. The website did not tell us that they closed at 2pm and our plane was a little late. Luckily someone was still there. We couldn't get our car but she gave us taxi fare to leave and return the following morning. So I give the staff an excellent rating and the website a poor one. If it had told us about the early Sunday closing we would have made a different arrangement and avoided the inconvenience.
