If you're driving in Chamonix in a group or have lots of hiking or winter sports gear, you might want to get an SUV or 4x4. However, it's better to hire a compact car if you don't feel confident driving a large vehicle, as the roads are quite windy and dangerous, so you'll want a vehicle you know you can handle. Also, if you're driving during ski season, choose a car with good safety features, like traction control, for those slippery icy roads.

In the town centre of Chamonix, the speed limit is 20-30 kph, while major single-lane roads outside towns are usually 90 kph. The maximum speed limit in France is 130 kph on motorways in good weather. However, the speed limit drops to 110 kph in some sections near Chamonix, so look for signs.

Police regularly check for illegal parking, and the fines can be pretty expensive, so always park in legal spots and read signs carefully. During ski season, it can be challenging to find parking in Chamonix, especially at the bottom of ski lifts. A great alternative is to park at your accommodation and catch one of the shuttle buses included in your ski pass. When you hire a car in Chamonix, it's a good idea to keep it safe from the elements in an undercover car park. Some covered car parks include Parking Saint-Michel, Parking Place du Mont Blanc, and Parking Entreves.
