Top tips for hiring a car at Austin Bergstrom Airport

  • As the name suggests, Austin Bergstrom International Airport (AUS) in Texas, USA, serves the greater Austin metropolitan area. The airport is conveniently located close to the U.S. Route 183 a north-south U.S. highway that runs through Texas. Downtown Austin is 5 miles away and a car is the quickest way to get there. Instead of waiting for a bus that takes 40min to reach downtown, a car hire at Austin Bergstrom Airport will get you there in just around 15min.
  • As the second-largest state in the USA, the best way to explore Texas is by car. Driving through this expansive land, you’ll witness a diverse landscape of rolling hills, empty deserts, windy beaches, prairie farms and pine forests, as well as big cities. Famed for wide, straight roads, driving is easy and makes remote areas accessible. When driving on the highways of Texas, remember to carry change for the tolls, and be aware that drivers overtake on both the left and right.
  • Car hire at Austin Bergstrom Airport is very simple and accessible. From the main Barbara Jordan Terminal’s lower level (Baggage Claim) where you’ll likely be exiting from, take the pedestrian walkway that leads to the ground floor of the car park. From there, either take the lift or stairs up to the second floor (Garage Level 3), or take a shuttle to the Rental Car Facility. There you will find counters from large international car hire agencies with friendly and helpful staff to assist you with the collection of your car.
  • With so many providers of car hire at Austin Bergstrom Airport, use KAYAK to compare the prices of different categories of vehicles and between each agency. Make sure to compare what each agency offers as standard with your rental and with which vehicle. For example, Hertz includes theft and liability coverage and fee-free cancellation up to 24h before pick up on some of their vehicle categories, but not all.
  • Book your car hire at Austin Bergstrom Airport at least 1 day before your trip in order to get a below-average price

FAQs about renting a car at Austin Bergstrom Airport

  • What kind of services and amenities are available at the Austin Bergstrom Airport car hire facility?

Since the car hire providers have their counters close to the Barbara Jordan Terminal, you can easily access all the same amenities of the airport. You can expect toilets, water filling stations, a baby nursing room, a variety of shopping and dining options, mobile phone charging, and even live music.

  • What documents do I need to take with me to hire a car at the airport?

International customers hiring a car must present their home country driver's licence that is valid, unexpired and includes a photograph. Additionally, an International Driver’s Permit is necessary if the licence is not written in Roman alphabets (languages such as Korean, Hebrew, Mongolian, etc.). You will also need a credit or debit card for your car hire provider to place a hold on in the event they need to charge you fees. All drivers will be required to be at least 21 years old, to up to 25 years old for larger and special vehicles, and a fee may be charged for drivers under 25 by the agency.

  • How do I return my hire car at the Airport?

Depending on which car hire provider you used, you will be required to either park the car in the same area from where it was picked up, or park it at a specified returns area for inspection by your provider. A staff member will then make sure the hire car is in the same state as it at the start of your journey, including checking the fuel level (make sure to check the tank was full to begin with when you pick it up).

  • Which car rental companies will pick you up at Austin Bergstrom Airport?

Car rental companies that offer shuttle or pick-up services from Austin Bergstrom Airport to off-airport locations include Advantage, Alamo, Avis, Budget, Dollar, Enterprise Rent-A-Car, Europcar, E-Z Rent-A-Car, Fox, and Hertz.

I arrived with my reservation and they didn’t have any cars. They told me I’d need to go somewhere else. Other rental companies were booked up because of a big F1 races and the few available cars at other rental companies were triple the price. I ended up without a car for a weekend with my elderly grandmother who is 96. It’s irresponsible to confirm a reservation is there isn’t a car available!

Was not able to pick up a rental car after getting into Austin because my flight was delayed. No arrangement was made. Had to spend money on two different Lyft rides in order to be able to pick up the car the next day. Very disappointed. Really left me in a lurch. What is the point of having a rental car if you need to use Lyft anyway? Overall, terrible experience. I will probably not use dollar again for business or personal trips

When I got there, they only had 18 passenger vans. They did not have the car reserved. It was 11 PM and I had my two nephews with me. They ended up giving me an electric car that was not charged. It was my first time driving an electric car, and I actually loved the way the car drove, however, we had to stop and charge it to get to my brother’s house because it only had 30% charge when we left Avis. By the time we got to my brothers it had something like 9% charge left. We charged it for 40 minutes and only gained 1%. The next day I had to park the car at the charger and leave it. I was not able to use the car at all. It only served me to get to my brothers and to get back to the airport. And I could only get back to the airport by charging it for six hours. Meanwhile, my brother had two electric chargers that we could not use because they did not have a Tesla converter plug in the car. Those plugs are free from Hyundai, but they didn’t have them so high-speed charging was out as an option. The car was dirty as well. I was told I could exchange the car, but the only Avis dealership within the range of the charge that I had had no cars. So I paid a lot of money for a car I couldn’t use.

The longest check-in line I have ever waited on in 47 years. And they did not have anything in the class of car that I had booked, and effectively downgraded me to an suv. Had I not advocated for myself for a different model at least, I would have gotten a terrible car. Generally when the class I've booked hasn't been available, I've gotten an upgrade to something better. The fact that they bumped me to something worse is a disgrace.

I used the skipped the line feature when checking in and the car that I was given, had no lower anchors for car seats so the remedy was I had to wait in line at the desk which completely defeated the skip the line process, even though the car parked next to the original car did have low anchors. Unhappy toddlers mixed with a long line made this for a very poor experience when it could’ve just been “pick any of these in this section.”

I got conned into buying insurance and roadside even though I had all of that already. I tried explaining tot he lady at the Avis rental counter in Austin that since I had my own insurance I was paying with my AMEX I was double covered but she would not let me rent the car until I bought the over priced insurance. Took my rental from being 262 for three days to 600 for three days. Complained after the experience and was told that I could not get my full refund for the insurance or roadside because they are OPTIONAL and you do not HAVE to buy them. I was only offered a 50% refund. I will never use QEEQ as an aggregator or use Budget/Avis rental ever again. This was complete dishonesty and I will spread the word. Horrible company do not use any of these services mentioned.

Absolutely terrible experience the other day at this site. The Budget counter was unmanned. Sign stated to use the Avis desk, which only had one rep on duty. Significant line/wait. I was in line for 45 minutes waiting for a car, and after finally getting a car assignment, went upstairs to find that another patron had been given the same car, forcing the other patron to go BACK into line again. I returned the car with a full tank of gas and was still charged 31.97 for fuel service. I will never, ever, rent from Budget ever again.

You could disclose on your website that you only accept Major credit card. I have rented from other companies and have been able to use my bank supported debit card as a major credit card. Definitely not “easy to rent”. We waited for 1.5 hours for a shuttle to pick us up from the designated area. Called the office 2 times and was told the shuttle driver should be coming by… I was then put on hold for 21 minutes before I hung up. By that time, 10 other people showed up to be picked up and they, too, called and were placed on hold or told the same thing. When the shuttle finally came and was dropped off at the office there was only one gentlemen manning the desk. The procedure was clunky and, of course, was lengthy. They didn’t have the car we rented ready so, for the sake of our time, we accepted a lesser vehicle. While the guy at the desk was friendly nought, all we kept hearing was “it’s not my fault people don’t do their jobs”… over all, it was a pretty frustrating experience. Not worth saving a few extra $ since we had to Uber from the drop off because the office was closed.

I do not recommend Easirent and will not use them again. Wait for pick up at airport was very long. Time for paperwork and processing at facility was very long and slow. It was supposed to be low cost but multiple add on costs made it not such a good deal. Car was very dirty on inside - seat was very stained to the point that I needed to get a seat cover. Checkout was fast but I got no accounting at end of rental and did not get receipt. I am waiting to see what the final cost will be. Staff people were friendly.

When I booked it, stated it was on the airport campus. It was not. We had to wait for a shuttle. One man had been waiting 45 minutes. The shuttle came and it was a 10-15 minute ride from the airport. We arrived and there were no cars. There were about 5 other parties waiting for cars. One couple had already been waiting 2.5 hours. I canceled my reservation and got an Uber. I learned my lesson and will never use a company I’m not familiar with again. It wasn’t worth saving money.

Overall great experience. They were stretches thin due to long weekend. Still all the employees provided great service at both pick up and drop.

The make you pay $25 per day for insurance if you don’t bring your declaration page from your personal car insurance documents with you. Nobody caries that while traveling! The insurance was equal to the rental fee

The car itself was wonderful. The check in process and check out process were horrible. We arrived and were surprised by an additional $125 in fees that were not part of the original reservation. We were not given a very good explanation. We were only told that it was an extra charge because we had our own insurance and a toll device. At check out, we were suppose to be able to drop the car off at the original location and then be shuttled to the airport. We received a message the day of that the Routes employee was not able to be at work by 8:00 a.m. to provide us this service and that we needed to drive to the airport ourselves.
