Puerto Vallarta car rental experiences: the best tips from KAYAK users

Insights shared by verified travellers who rented a car in Puerto Vallarta
BruceMar 2026
Know that the hidden charges are extensive and that the traffic rules especially on the main highway are complex as many left turns you have to exit right and the cross over the strait through traffic at an green arrow light. You need to know where to exit or travel some times a couple of miles to turn around.
ErnestJan 2026
Just be sure to follow the speed limits - and NEVER give anyone your driver's license. If they ask for it - show it to them but do not relinquish it.
Verified travelerFeb 2025
Liability insurance is a must. Purchase rental directly rather than through a travel site as it is way more money.
Verified travelerJan 2025
Credit card insurance DOESN'T COVER extra insurance in Mexico. Sadly that's the way it is but at least you know and there are never surprises like in Paris which is the worse.
Verified travelerJun 2024
Get a trusted, well reviewed company, and actually check the real reviews, as Budget in Mexico may be ran very differently than Budget elsewhere in the world.
Verified travelerApr 2024
Ignore the people with maps when you land and go straight to the rental car agencies. Negotiate lower fares.
Verified travelerMar 2024
Don’t take the shuttle, just walk to the rental company.

drove to Maztlan..used toll highway..not sure the moeny is worth it..pavement more even but still 2 lanes most of the way like the other highway..
Verified travelerJan 2024
I would suggest negotiating at the airport rather than booking something in advance. Also, taxis and Uber are pretty reliable so consider saving money and not renting.
amandaSept 2023
Driving was fine. Just be careful.
Verified travelerNov 2023
Go with a bigger company.
LuAnnJul 2023
It is definitely tricky driving in PV. Left hand turns are made from the far right lane. Your best bet is to follow other cars until you get the hang of it. Also be sure to stop for flashing green lights that quickly turn yellow, then red. The police are very present and looking for tourists to make mistakes. Pay attention to speed limit signs as they change frequently.
ThuyJun 2023
Driving is decent. Took us a day or two to get used of driving rules there.
Verified travelerMay 2023
Call and speak to someone prior to arrival. Have the policy in hand in both languages regarding insurance.

KAYAK’s top tips for renting a car in Puerto Vallarta

  • Perhaps the top reason travelers should rent a vehicle during their time in Puerto Vallarta is that there is no better way to see the beautiful coastline. There are many gorgeous beach spots that dot the coastline near Puerto Vallarta and many of them are a quick drive from town. Some of the options include Playa de los Muertos (7 km or 3.4 miles away) and Playa las Gemelas (16 km or 10 miles away).
  • Excited to begin your trip in Puerto Vallarta? You can pick up your rental car as soon as you arrive. For travelers with flights to Licenciado Gustavo Díaz Ordaz International Airport, the rental car counters can be found in both the National and International Arrivals Halls.
  • Francisco Medina Ascencio is the main road in Puerto Vallarta and is often a key part of any itinerary. It is a very large road with four lanes of traffic on each side and can be a bit confusing for first time drivers. For instance, to take a left turn off the road you must exit onto one of the parallel running access roads and from there you can exit onto other streets.
  • Rush hour in Puerto Vallarta, like in many cities in Mexico, is no joke. In general, the morning rush hour goes from 7:00 a.m. and lasts until 9:00 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. As for the afternoon and evening peak, it starts at around 5:00 p.m. and finishes up at around 7:00 p.m. Highway 200, one of the main thoroughfares in Puerto Vallarta, experiences the bulk of the city’s congestion and should be avoided during peak hours.
  • 25% of our users found rental cars in Puerto Vallarta for ₹ 1,488 or less
  • Small rental cars in Puerto Vallarta are around 63% cheaper than other car types, on average

They are crooks! They pretended to find a new 1" scratch on a hidden part of the awning over the back window and we are still fighting with them to get my $700 deposit back. And, at checkout - we were forced to listen to a condominium presentation begging us to go to a 90 minute showing way out of the way. When trying to resolve the "scratch" issue - the employees were rude, short, and did not listen. I truly feel they were taking advantage of the "gringos".

Took almost an hour to get the car once I got to the rental shop. Was charged additional insurance even though I have worldwide cover and then an extortionate warranty of 1333 dollars which because I was using a debit card I had to pay an additional non refindable 66 dollars. 2 bars of fuel on the gauge. A rental that started at 57dollars ended up costing over 200. The hidden fees are a joke and I will not be in a hurry to rent a car from this company ever again

When I picked up the car I had an unexpected $430.00 mandatory insurance premium charged. I bought insurance though KAYAK and was charged the extra at the airport. Staff did were not very interested in inspecting the car when I picked it but went over it with a fine tooth comb when I dropped it off. They were especially interested in the under carriage as the speed bumps are very high in some places and the under carriage will drag going into their parking lot. Not a very welcoming experience and I felt like they were trying to not to reimburse the 35,000 past deposit that they charged on to of the extra insurance. Never have been treated that way in any country renting a car and I for years I rented weekly.

Terrible rental experience. They were asking for passport to rent a car. Who carries a passport to rent a car? Very disappointing. The cost of insurance per day was $35 higher than other car rental companies with identical coverage.

Prices were quoted in CAD and were asked in USD at a way worse rate than what I anticipated, and with no internet on the spot to verify and show my reservation I had no choice but to accept and go with whatever they were saying. The car was in rough shape and not particularly clean, with the radio inoperative and bits ands broken inside, and at drop off they charged me 190$ for a cleaning fee because there were some dog hair on the floor in the back. Overall when I should have paid 425$ Cad I ended un paying over 1100$ cad. I should have stuck with the competitor’s rental, this was way overpriced and will definitely not recommend to anyone.

They charged almost $100 more than quoted. The car was not ready. They made me wait and watch a guy add an entire litre of oil. Was 45 minutes to pick up the car. When I saw my credit card bill after the drop off they billed me $10,851.00 CDN for a 7 hour car rental. I have been trying to get someone to help reverse this for 5 days now. This is not a fun vacation for me.

The Price tha Kayak says and the price they give on the spot, it is not the same. How come can I get an 181$ US rate for a week here and on the spot the agent tells me it's 560$ US with insurance. I think I am supposed to be aware of the full price in advance, before getting there on the spot the day of. Where are the hidden fees? Or is the agent trying to rip us out? Something it is not right here, renting a car it is not supposed to be an awful experience, and every time it causes me anxiety cause it is never the right price you negotiated. Never coming back!

KAYAK
By far the worst rental car experience of my life. We were charged much more the the rate advertised on Hotwire and the “insurance” charge made my total 3x more than what I found online. $360 USD for a 2 day rental, MORE than I paid for an entire week rental with a different agency in the area the week before. On top of that, the agents tried to charge us an extra $1000 pesos to clean out a little dog hair that was in the car for “extra work” they would need to do. The manager tried to negotiate with us when we argued, and lowered it to $500 pesos, as if it was some kind of deal that we had to negotiate. There was nothing about dog hair in the contract, and when we pointed that out, the agent pointed to a different section about smoking in the car, claiming that it also applied to dog hair. Anyway, we didn’t want to pay this absurd fee so We took the car and cleaned it with OUR HANDS and it took 10 minutes. We read terrible reviews online but decided to risk it since it was only a 2 day rental. It was way overpriced, a horrible experience, and honestly the whole company seems like a giant scam. Knowing the reviews, we were cautious on everything: we brought the far back a day early, full tank of gas, got the 100% insurance coverage, and they still tried to rip off a client like us. Hertz should be ashamed to be associated with this company, and they should also be investigated for fraud, based on our experience and others I’ve read. I will never be renting from Hertz again and I will be sharing this review with everyone I know.

I could not get my rental because they were saying that I needed to get an other insurances with them. Their reason was that it was the popular season, so my insurance with my credit card was not doing the job. Even if it was clearly written that it was alright and that if I took an insurance with another company, it would cancel the one that I took. Also, the insurance that they asked cost 10k$… So, we had to make phone calls for about 3 hours to try to make them understand, and we finished having a refound. I do not recommend taking a reservation with American car rental in Mexico, it was a real trouble.

They asked for 300 usd extra on top of the price i payed online. They wouldn’t let me leave the car lot with the car without paying. The ad said there might be extra cost if drop off was a different location. But this extra cost was for nothing. I contacted priceline to get help but they said all they could do was cancel the rental which would have left me and my family stranded without a car. I am asking you to pay the difference as you are responsible for not showing the true price on your system.

I didn't even end up renting the car. When I got to the location, they told me I needed mandatory insurance, even if my credit card offered it as a benefit. They gave me 3 "plans" that offered less coverage based on price: $130/day, $100/day, and $60/day. I rented this car for ~$20 day, and now they want to charge me AT LEAST $60/day for insurance? My sister and I walked out of the location and we walked into a Hertz to rent from them. I will NEVER rent a car from KAYAK or Rentalcars.com again!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Serious credibility issues for both of your firms.
